Wood & Hughes sterling silver napkin ring holder, from the 19th century, with raised beaded motifs as well as finely engraved with stylized motifs and a monogram. It measures 1 7/8'' in diameter by 2'' in height, weighs 2.4 troy ounces, and bears hallmarks as shown.
Wood & Hughes began in 1833 with a partnership between Jacob Wood, William Gale and Jasper Hughes. Both Wood and Hughes had been apprentices under Gale. William Gale was succeeded in the business by his son William Gale Jr. (1825-1885). Some of Gale’s works belong to museum collections, such as those of the Brooklyn Museum. The Gale and the Wood & Hughes firms grew to once be the largest manufacturers of silverware in the U.S.
