Set of 4 Cottle gilt sterling silver salt and pepper shakers from the late 19th or early 20th century, beautifully adorned with stylized curvilinear motifs. They measure 1 7/8'' in height by 1 1/2'' in depth, weigh 4.1 troy ounces, and bear hallmarks as shown.

Cottle Co. was founded by Shubael Cottle in 1860s or 1870s as makers of sterling silver and gold vanity and novelty items. Shubael Cottle retired in 1878 and the firm continued as Hale & Mulford until it was succeeded in 1884 by Seth W. Hale & Company. The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York holds a collection of lithographs by George W. Averell showing jewelry designed by Mulford, Hale & Cottle in the late 19th century. The firm closed down circa 1917.
